A very sleepy Manda
May. 8th, 2013 06:59 pmFinal final is done and submitted. Not my best effort, but that is okay. Two grades in, both excellent. Two grades outstanding, one being for the final I just submitted. Doubt that one will be as good, but I can live with that.
Am very tired. Spent most of yesterday working, noted an itchy, inflamed bite on my arm but didn't pay much attention to it. When I got out of the shower I noticed most of the lower half of my upper arm was red, and a smaller section was even more vivid red and slightly swollen. It itched like crazy and my whole arm ached a little. I took some benadryl with my usual night time meds and went to bed, planning on going to get it looked at in the morning. Woke up around 1:00 and the pain was pretty intense. It was radiating down through my hand. The pain was bad enough that there was no way I was going to get back to sleep. So I checked facebook to see if any of my neighbors might still be awake (a few are night owls), and then went and knocked on one's door. She was very sweet and was happy to drive me to the ER to have my arm looked at. Her very sweet dog road along with us and gave me kisses and cuddles. The local ER is often very quiet (rural area) at night, so we didn't have a long wait or treatment time. The decided it was most like a spider bite as the rash was not at all like the bulls-eye ones seen in Lyme and other tic borne illnesses. They gave me a prescription dose of Ibuprofen, which I normally avoid as it makes me bruise more easily, but I was happy for anything that might dent the pain and inflammation. They also gave me a dose of Kefflex, and antibiotic, and sent me home with a script for more. Suggested frequent icing to keep the swelling down, and occasionally soaking it in warm soapy water. Haven't figured out a way to do that yet, since it involves most of my upper arm. My friends have a bath tub, so I might try to soak for a bit later. I'm to be on the Kefflex for a week, which means that I have to stop taking my tetracycline (my current Lyme antibiotic) until I'm done with the Kefflex. :P My Lyme doc said to keep a close eye on the area and make sure it heals at a reasonable time, and if it isn't better soon to have it looked at again.
All in all I'm okay, just achy and tired. Very glad to be done with the semester so I can rest a little. Spending a few days with friends, then I'll head back to my place and slowly begin the sorting and packing process of moving. I am grateful for my many friends, and for sweet and awesome neighbors. I am also super happy to be done with my third year of law school. One more semester and I'm done. :)

Date: 2013-05-08 11:25 pm (UTC)Second, ooooh on the bug bite. DD1 had a spider bite when she was a wee tot and I freaked out, thinking it was Lyme but doc said it was most likely a spider bite. They are scary! I'm glad you are feeling better. Hope the Keflex does the trick.

Date: 2013-05-08 11:32 pm (UTC)Bug bites like this are very scary. Last time I had one this bad was when I was a little girl. That bite came with flu-like symptoms plus the rash, which I am not experiencing with this bite, and was more than likely from a tic rather than a spider (though I wouldn't realize that for many years). It's sore, and the placement of the bite seems to be affecting my finger nerves, but I don't feel feverish or fluish. So it's not likely an acute case of tic-borne illness. I'm visiting my heart family this weekend, so I am in good hands. One sister is a nurse, the other is an EMT.
