The Martian - no spoilers

alee_grrlWent to see "The Martian" this afternoon. Was incredibly impressed by the film. It's witty, suspenseful (in the survival story kind of way rather than in a thriller kind of way), heart-warming at times and heart-breaking at times. The acting is phenomenal, and it is absolutely stunning visually. Like Guardians of the Galaxy the soundtrack is frequently a character in its own right. While the focus is on Matt Damon's characters there is a wonderfully diverse ensemble of support characters that keeps the movie from become a mind-numbing event like "The Castaway" was. I highly recommend it and am very glad I saw it on the big screen.
ETA: I'm convinced that Chiwetel Ejiofor can take on any role and be amazing in it. If you haven't seen "Kinky Boots" do so. I loved him as the Operative in Serenity, and he is great as the Director of Mars Missions in this film. But he is utterly amazing in "Kinky Boots."

Date: 2015-10-11 01:47 am (UTC)It's good to hear that I'm not the only one who loves Chiwetel Ejiofor and can watch "Kinky Boots" again and again! As for his role as The Operative in "Serenity", I really would love to see a TV series based on that character and his transformation into someone who is a cross between Mal and Shepherd Book (since we all pretty much know that Book was a former operative). Just so long as Whedon doesn't have his hands in it, that is...that man takes entirely too much delight in pain, betrayal and sexual assault, at least in my opinion. :-p

I love a lot of his shows, but have become frustrated with how he manages certain things (like you said, he seems to delight in pain, betrayal and sexual assault). I was very unhappy with most of Avengers: Age of Ultron for that reason. The only thing that he's done recently that I really loved was not something he had a hand in writing. His version of "Much Ado About Nothing" was surprisingly excellent.
