The same group that brought us the historically minded music video "Too Late to Apologize: A Declaration" has just released this re-imagined Lady Gaga video. Using the provocative imagery from Gaga's Bad Romance and adapting it (very effectively) to the Women's Suffrage movement.
Considering just how many states are attempting to pass (or have passed) rather horrific laws that either force women to undergo invasive ultrasounds prior to abortion (Texas, Virginia) or are attempting legislation that would allow doctors to withhold crucial pre-natal health information (including the fact that the pregnancy is ectopic) from a woman in order to prevent abortion (Arizona), a powerful reminder about women's rights and the suffrage movement is needed right now. Women fought hard to get the right to vote, for reproductive rights and women's health and equality. Now we need to continue to fight. This is more than just a pro-life versus pro-choice debate, these decisions (especially the one allowing doctors to lie via omission to their patients are incredibly dangerous to all women. Many pre-natal conditions, like ectopic pregnancy, require an abortion to save the life of the mother. Rarely is the fetus viable in many of these cases (especially ectopic pregnancies), and so the chances of saving the baby by refusing to tell the mother of the danger is slim to none. What is the value in such a lie? Requiring invasive procedures to procure an abortion layer yet another psychological shame and trauma on an already traumatic decision. All of these laws weaken the ability of all women to get proper health care and treatment, especially treatment specific to reproductive health. And our reproductive health affects the rest of our health (I have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome so I'm very familiar with how well integrated our bodily systems are).
Need more reasons to want to vote these guys out of office, and take to the streets in anger over these issues? Check out this thought provoking short story, which offers a look at how "Personhood" laws could unfold, and just how they might affect our lives.
