Meme: More Crucial Lists

sulien gave me the idea to broaden the 10 Crucial Movie post.

So here are additional lists that will help you get to know me a little better. It's really hard to limit the lists to 10, btw. These are a mix of favorites and things that had a great impact on me. Generally I love things because they impacted me greatly, but some things are one offs in a way. For example, the movie "Like Water For Chocolate" is beautiful and well done, and it had a huge impact on me because it affirmed much of my own experience. It is also a movie I would never watch a second time precisely because it hit far too close to home.

Seaquest DSV was such a fun show.

It really was. I even loved the third season (the 2032 one). Was one of my first fandoms too, along with Ranma 1/2 and GenX.

Charles de Lint! Yes! I love his work too, it has that quality of ephemeral magic that all good tales of faerie do. Some of his stories have given me cold shivers of dread or longing as well as that feeling of magic, but they are all greatly affecting. I need to add him to my list.

He is one of my favorite authors. I had the absolute joy of meeting him and his wife at FaerieCon last fall. They are super nice. If you haven't picked up a copies of "The Cats of Tanglewood Forest" and "Seven Wild Sister" they are wonderful, short folk tales, and beautifully illustrated by Charles Vess. Like Nina Kiriki Hoffman he doesn't shy away from the darker aspects of the universe, which may be one of the reasons I love his work so very much.

They really are underrated. The "Four" album got me through some very rough teenage years, and (pardon the pun) I've been hooked on them since. :)

Most definitely. Four was my go-to album in middle school. I've come to really appreciate Straight On Till Morning, and you post reminded me that I really need to add Justify The Thrill to my writing playlist.

Same here. I wore that poor cassette out. Later bought it in cd form to replace the worn out tape. I also have their Travelogue: Blues Traveler Classics and their more recent (2008) North Hollywood Shootout. So many good tunes.

So far Dreams Underfoot is the only book of Charles de Lint's that I've read (there are plans to remedy that), but it was the sort of writing I aspire to. Lewis Carroll, on the other hand, I never really got.

The Alice books are the only ones I'm managed to finish of Carroll's works (I have the omnibus edition of all his works but haven't read it much). Alice has always resonated for me because of the chaotic and frequently nonsensical environment I grew up. It gave me a sense of not making that journey alone.

I also think I was just the right age and had just the right background when I originally read Carroll. I must have been ten or eleven. I knew the basic of the story not only from the Disney movie, but from a Windham Classics video game where you got to play Alice. By the time I got around to reading the book I already loved the characters and was able to overcome some of the writing things that would have put me off.

I find sometimes class books are a bit like fandom for me. Sometimes I become familiar with the basic memes and story tropes of a fandom long before I see or engage the source material. I have even had the experience of being disappointed by source material after being introduced to the amazing fanworks available.
