Prepared for the worst, hoping for the best

Well I'm as prepared as one can be for a hurricane/snowstorm thing. I've got plenty of drinking water stored (12 gallons all recently put aside); 10 gallons of water stored for flushing/washing up/etc.; food; means for cooking and staying warm (yay for propane cook stove and propane heat), an ample supply of medications and general first aid stuff; loads of batteries for my flashlights, lantern and weather radio; clean clothes (did laundry today); and board/card games to tempt my house neighbors into keeping me company, not to mention a ton of books and my knitting project to keep me entertained. I'm picking up the rest of my medication refills on Monday and will grab any last minute items I may need then. Hopefully Sandy will loose power or turn out to sea, but better to be over-prepared than under-prepared.

Lots of good thoughts and love to everyone who might be in her path.

It's good that you've got things settled and in place if worst comes to worst with Sandy. After having to go for a week without power during the wind storms in December of 2007, I can attest to how important stores of food, water, batteries and books are! Be safe and I hope the storm bypasses you completely. *keeping you and other folks back on the East Coast in my thoughts*

Storms and long power outages were fairly common things for me growing up, particularly when we lived in North Louisiana. I remember an ice storm when I was about 14 that left us without power for a bit more than a week. It was the first time I realized how important it was not only to have drinking water and food stored up, but to also have something to use for flushing and other basic cleaning tasks. It was also when I realized how useful it is to have a gas cook stove and a source of heat that was not electric. Power outages were fairly common when I was in the Peace Corps, and after Dean we were without power for quite some time. They are also fairly frequent in Vermont, particularly in winter. So I am well used to hunkering down. It is strange how no matter how many storms you go through, there is always an edge of nervousness and a feeling that you are forgetting something when the next one comes in.

My mother was telling me how the CT stores are all out of shelf-safe milk because for whatever reason, in her area? People stock up on milk and bread when ANY sort of storm is coming. At least she remembered to buy bottled water for drinking just in case this time. Good wishes to everyone in the path.

My local co-op still had small things of powered milk. So I grabbed some to use for coffee whitener. :) Folks around here do tend to stock up on bread and milk. I imagine water, batteries, candles and first aid stuff is going to be in short supply soon. Need to remember to refill my gas tank when I am out and about Monday. I was fortunate that I didn't have to buy a lot of bottle water for drinking purposes. I have two five gallon drums used for camping. I fill them with the water from my tap, which is good well water, and store them. I refresh the water about every six months. I'm very glad I did most of my shopping on Friday. The stores are going to be a nightmare tomorrow and Monday.
