spokane state of mind
Aug. 13th, 2012 08:04 pmMy non-vacation has gone well so far, though I spend a few minutes every day wishing I were home in Vermont. It is heart breaking to see my grandmother struggle so much with every thought. She refuses to use her oxygen consistently despite her COPD and doesn't understand that lack of sufficient oxygen is one of the reasons her memory and cognitive functioning are suffering so. She wants to blame it all on the high dose of prednisone that she was on, which may well have contributed to the problem. Her sister was the only one here when she was in the hospital and when she saw her doctor after she was released. Unfortunately her sister's memory is not much better. So there is much confusion over just which pills she is supposed to be taking. Icalled the docs office this morning and left a message. Will call again in the a.m..
Both grandma and dad are incredibly hard of hearing and both are touchy about a lot of things. Things are very tense in the house. We are making headway (mostly thanks to my uncle and his wife) on talking grandma around to assisted living. I am going to call and set up an appointment for us to go visit the top choice later this week. My uncle will be back on sunday and will take over from there. My dad is doing his best to help, but is having a hard time with the whole situation. He is not the most patient of people and gets very frustrated when we have to have the same conversations with grandma everyday.
I am holding up rather well and remembering to take care of myself too. Will be glad to hea home on Saturday though. The foldable cane I got made a world of difference traveling though. Please forgive any typos and strange words. I am typing this on my Kindle Fire, and autocorrect is a vicious evil thing.
