Hearts Beat Loud
Jan. 13th, 2019 06:38 pmSo tonight's movie was Hearts Beat Loud, which Google Play has listed as a Comedy. It's got that off-beat, quirky, indie feel, but I wouldn't classify it as a comedy. It's not really a drama either, though it's far more drama than comedy. More a slice-of-life, coming of age/transitions story (it's more about coming to terms with changes in our lives, growing older as well as growing up, and the complicated choices that come with life. Despite the fact that it wasn't the comedy or elation filled big break story I expected from the trailer, I really enjoyed it. It's a quiet sort of film, focused on characters and relationships. It felt real in a way a lot of movies with similar themes do not. And the actors' performances and soundtrack are both lovely.
The movie does have what I would call an open/ambiguous ending, so if you are one who likes a clear happy ending with things neatly tied up, then it might not be a film you would enjoy. But if you don't mind pondering the possibilities and finishing the story in your head, and you like quieter, character driven films, you might want to check it out.
