I didn't either until I lived there for a couple of years as Peace Corps volunteer. The area where my group did their training, Hellshire, was very arid and filled with cacti and succulents. I was not at all expecting that. The island had rolling prairie lick areas (known as Cockpit country), lush rain forests, desert like areas, and various types of coastal areas. I never realized that such a small geographic area could have such incredible variety in ecosystems and climates.
